The 8 angles of the Aṣṭakōṇa or Octagon symbolize the 4 directions of the earth – east, west, north and south and the 4 corners – North-east, South-east, South-west and North-west. It is believed that the Aṣṭakōṇa can destroy pain so that Kaal (death) cannot kick. Contemplation of the Octagon spreads the evil effect of Kaal in all 8 directions, leaving the heart in high spirits and full of joy.
